Arroyo, Sox Feted at Yale Club!

Homeless Sightings Down; Derision of Yankees Up; Committee Reports Tedious, Overlong

New York, May 27, 2005: Since the mid-1960s, BLOHARDs have been gathering two or three times a year to lunch with their idols, talk baseball and, all too often, commiserate. While these lunches have witnessed many unprecedented events, none is likely to be as vividly, or fondly, remembered as the first-ever breaking of bread with the world champion Red Sox.

Tardiness being a manifestation of passive aggressive hostility, festivities commenced promptly at noon with a cocktail reception and jubilant massing of the troops. In the interests of further hostility reduction, the cocktail period was extended somewhat beyond the appointed time, and by the time lunch was served at approximately 1:00 hostility among the 160 or so assembled BLOHARDs had been reduced to undetectable levels.

The "Beloved Helmsman", BLOHARD Founder, President and Owner James B. Powers initiated the formal portion of the program with a few well considered remarks on the miraculous events of last season, on the history we all share, and on the optimism we all feel for the Sox under their current management. He may also have enquired as to the whereabouts of Curt Schilling.

Bronson Arroyo, Sox starter and recipient of "Slappy" Rodriguez' tomahawk chop last fall, then spoke, answering questions posed by long-time Sox radio voice Jerry Trupiano. Arroyo was relaxed, gracious, smart, funny and self-effacing, The only let-down associated with Bronson's appearance was his appearance; his hair was disappointingly conventional.

Following Arroyo's brilliant stint came the reports of the haberdashery and electronic media committees, about which the less said the better. Suffice to say, the BLOHARDS are selling hats and shirts, and they have a website. One wonders why this information could not have been so concisely expressed at the lunch.

Momentum was re-established by long-time BLOHARD Bob Sullivan who read three passages from his recently published book Our Red Sox. The first of these, occurring at the beginning of the book, transpires at our trophy viewing last November, while another concerned fellow BLOHARD and noted raconteur Jane "Bambi" Wulff and the definition of the word "backpacker". All were deliriously received.

The program concluded with the always-entertaining Dr. Charles Steinberg who also recalled highlights of the 2004 season and discussed efforts to control scalping and increase the number of seats and amenities available at Fenway. He graciously answered questions from the floor, unfortunately running out of time just as a question concerning the status of Sox Ace Curt Schilling was shouted from the head table. One imagines the matter will be resolved prior to our next gathering in September.
