Because the four consecutive home runs by the Boston Red Sox against the Yankees on the night of April 22, 2007, will
go down in the record books as only the second time this feat has been accomplished against a single pitcher in the
history of Big League baseball, it is important that errors in the Times account of the event be corrected.
1) In "Five Home Runs, One Big Sweep for Red Sox," Sports section, April 23, Tyler Kepner reports that "Wright served
up a homer high into the Green Monster seats by Manny Ramirez."
In fact, the home run by Manny Ramirez flew over the
Monster seats, completely out of the ballpark, as a review of the ESPN telecast will make clear beyond any doubt.
Kepner goes on, ""Lowell smashed a 1-1 pitch over the Monster. . ." While this statement is technically correct, it
implies that the ball merely cleared the Monster [the Wall]. It would be more accurate to say "
over the Monster seats
and out of the ballpark." (See ESPN telecast for confirmation.)
2) In "Francona uses His Power of Suggestion to the Benefit of the Red Sox," Sports section, April 23, Jack Curry
writes, "Lowell lined one into the Green Monster seats. . . "
Lowell hit a towering fly ball, not a line drive, and it
soared completely out of the ball park, not into the Monster seats.
Please, let's preserve this historic event
accurately for the generations of baseball fans who will turn to the Times
as the newspaper of record.
Thank you.
