Please join us as we try to keep the wheels on the tracks for the first BLOHARDS luncheon in the club's illustrious history without our fearless leader and peerless visionary, Jim Powers, who passed away last November. We are proud to report that Jim spent his final evening e-mailing the BLOHARDS "brain trust" with concern about Theo Epstein's departure. The happy resolution of that situation is a sign that Jim already knows how to get things done in his new home.

We hope that the microphone works.

The Henry Berry Memorial Bus Trip was a rollicking success - two buses, no passengers left behind in either Westport or Boston. The Sox beat the Blue Jays who seemed never to recover from Adam Stern's rendition of their national anthem. Beckett was brilliant, hitting 96 on the gun and needing just 53 pitches over his final five innings. Cannot say enough about the renovations to Fenway, particularly the removal of the glass from the second level behind home plate that always made that area of the park look like the grandstand at Yonkers.

Besides Jim's passing, the headline story of the offseason was Johnny Damon's decision to sign with the Yankees. Following his explanation that the Yankees offer would enable him to "take care of his family" came the story in New York Magazine that Damon would be using at least some of his windfall to install a swing set inside his Manhattan apartment.

The early signs look good. Schilling, Beckett, and Papelbon have been brilliant, it looks as though it might be the Year of the Youkilis, the infield is Top 2-3 defensively in baseball, Manny is Manny (albeit with orange dreadlocks), and Ortiz is here until 2010. And the optimists among us will point out that 90% of Coco Crisp's fingers are fully functional.
