This month, we have a field report from BLOHARD editor-at-large Olina Sulak who informs us about a literary meet-and-greet opportunity with Johnny Damon, and we offer information as well about a similar opportunity with Dan Shaughnessy:
Turning first to the Shaughnessy tome, "
Reversing the Curse" is an account of the 2004 Red Sox season. Beginning with the Aaron Boone homer in 2003 and working its way through the subsequent A-Rod machinations and the miraculous post-season, it looks like a great read. Details are available
here. Anyhoo, the author himself is going to be doing a book signing at
the world famous Rivieria Cafe, located at 225 W. 4th St., Sunday April 3rd at 3:00PM, just hours before opening "day" at 8:00 that evening. Not only does the signing itself promise to be a fun time, but it also affords the opportunity to grab a table and kill a few hours before watching the game amongst friendly faces.
The next day, Monday the 4th, Damon will be autographing
his book in midtown. Crack field reporter Sulak submits this dispatch:
"Ok - here's some info for the site and fellow NYC based BLOHARDS:
April 4th, 2005 -
Johnny Damon's book: Idiot: Beating "the Curse" and Enjoying the Game of Life is released.
That day, at the Barnes & Noble at 600 Fifth Avenue (48th Street and 5th Avenue, NW Corner, can take the B, D, F or V trains to the Rockefeller Center stop) at 1:00pm, Johnny will be signing copies of his book.
The 4th of April is the day after the Red Sox play the yankees at the yankee home opener at the stadium. It's also a Monday.
I am one of those geeky chicks that goes to book signings/discussions when the topic/author interests me. I saw this and knew I HAD to pass it along!
The book can be pre-ordered through both Barnes & Noble (at $16.80 not including tax/shipping) and Amazon (at $16.32 not including tax/shipping).
However, as it is released the day of the signing - the best bet for those who want to get to see/meet Johnny and get it signed is to make sure they tell their boss they are going to be taking an extended lunch hour and get to B&N at around 12pm - buy the books there and get on line waiting for 1pm (they always have the books being signed behind the register on signing days so no need to waste time looking for it - just go right to the registers at the front of the store and have the cashier just get them for you). They may not be discounted at the store though - so be prepared to possibly pay more.
Now, generally, the rule is "no memorabilia signing" - they do this so the line is not held up. You can bring a camera and they will usually let you get a pic taken - but just one. You can TRY to bring some memorablilia (one baseball or one photo) and ask the B&N handlers (nicely!) or Johnny's publicist if he could PLEEEAASSEE just sign it for your sick little brother/son/dad, etc. Sometimes, they will allow it.
