"Are you sure we didn't sign Bernie, Damon and Arod?"
Said late in the game after the three formerly coveted players combine to
to go 0 for 9, strike out five times, hit into a double play, and make two errors.
|
| 9. | "John Flaherty
would have caught that!" Shouted to Randy Johnson
in the third inning after Jorge Posada ineffectually waves at a high fastball, allowing
the Red Sox' second run of the inning to score.

How great is it that A-Rod and Melky Cabrera are making crucial, inexplicable, errors
while Mike Lowell is barehanding balls on the run and Wily Mo is looking like the second coming
of Joe Dimaggio in the outfield?

"If I'm Mark Loretta, I'm taking two pitches here." Said in the fourth with a 3-0 count,
runners at second and third and Ortiz due up next. Loretta swings at the next pitch, rips a
two run single down the line and proceeds to get something like thirteen hits in his next nine
at bats. They're still trying to figure that one out.

"E-Rod! E-Rod!" Overheard in the fifth after the third baseman's second
catastrophic error.

"If the Yankees really cared about you they'd get you a competent catcher!"
Shouted to Johnson after his second wild pitch, in the fourth inning. He
leaves the game two batters later.

"Big Eunich!" Shouted to Johnson during the aforementioned departure.

"Run swiftly Hideki! Exert yourself in an attempt to intercept the soaring
trajectory of the hard-struck ball! Strive! Strive! Alas, it is not to be;
the ball glances off the warning track cinders and bounds away. Your enemies are
unleashed; they run rampant, without hinderance or fear. Your fellows watch in
dejection as you scramble after the elusive orb..." Said (more or less) after
Mike Lowell (I think) launches a prodigious blast in the ninth.

"We're reaching the Christians-versus-the-lions stage of the evening." Said
in the sixth with the Sox already up 10-2 and Manny leading off against Tanyon Sturtze.
Manny batters his offering for a tater.

"Isn't it time for A-Rod to hit a homer?" Said with one out and one on and
the Yanks trailing 11-2. He hits into a double play instead.
